The Equity Center is hiring two new positions in partnership with Virginia AmeriCorps! We seek individuals to serve as our Resource Knitting and Community Research Volunteers in Service to America (VISTA) in this yearlong program.

The Equity Center anchors UVA’s Center for Community Partnerships – both the physical office location and the efforts to connect UVA with community-focused initiatives. The Resource Knitting VISTA member will enhance UVA’s ability to connect with individual community members who have specific requests by creating a resource map of available resources offered by UVA. The person in this position will also complete a resource map of current and potential SHP partners for students and families enrolled in the program.

Separately, the Community Research VISTA will strengthen partnerships with community-based organizations, nonprofits, and government offices by conducting needs assessments for program partners while operationalizing the Community Fellows-in-Residence Program, a short-term professional development program. Community residents are given UVA resources to complete a project of their design that meets a community need aligned with the President’s Council on UVA Community Relations priorities.

More Information

  • The Segal Education Award is available to members who complete their year of service and is equivalent to the maximum Pell Grant for the fiscal year of your award (currently $7,395).
  • AmeriCorps has also cultivated a cohort of ‘Schools of National Service,’ colleges and universities offering additional benefits such as additional financial aid or admissions preference to AmeriCorps alumni.
  • Members do receive healthcare benefits. There are two options:
  • Members who do not have healthcare / do not wish to purchase a plan independently can enroll in the no-cost plan provided by AmeriCorps. The co-pays associated with this plan are extremely low, but it is also limited in what is covered.
  • Members who purchase their healthcare or are on a family member’s plan can enroll in a no-cost reimbursement program for out-of-pocket costs such as co-pays or costs before the plan deductible is met.
  • Members with children under 13 may receive free or reduced-cost childcare based on their household income.
  • AmeriCorps VISTA alumni receive Non-Competitive Eligibility (essentially hiring preference) for federal jobs. They also have access to ‘Employers of National Service,’ a database of other employers who give hiring preference to alumni.
  • Members will receive a bi-weekly living allowance of $878.
