Operations Program Manager

The Democracy Initiative Center and the College and Graduate School of Arts and Sciences seeks a Program Manager for the newly created Equity Center, reporting to the Director of Operations.
The Democracy Initiative Center for the Redress of Inequity Through Community-Engaged Scholarship (the “Equity Center”) is the University of Virginia’s newest collaborative multi-disciplinary center, established in August 2019. The Equity Center tangibly redresses racial and socioeconomic inequality in university communities by advancing a transformative approach to universities’ fundamental research missions, which will in turn reform institutional values, pedagogy and operations. Specifically, the Equity Center will change the way that University of Virginia (UVA) scholars interact with members of the surrounding community, replacing a model that has been extractive with one that is respectful and collaborative and conducts research that benefits communities. This approach will be a model for institutions of higher education domestically and globally to leverage their anchor positions in local communities to eradicate racial and socioeconomic inequity.

The Operations Program Manager position has three fundamental roles, all of which require exceptional attention to detail, organizational skills, and the highest standards of integrity. The first role is to assist with operations of the Equity Center and the Office for Community Partnerships, the second is to manage designated programs as assigned by the Executive Director for the Equity Center, the third is to support the research and community engaged teaching for the Equity Center faculty. The Program Manager will also help to establish and nurture collaborative relationships with academic and community partners and develop processes to strengthen student and staff engagement.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Provides operational assistance for the Equity Center and Center for Community Partnerships Office Hub to include event planning and space use coordination. 

  • Assists the Director of Operations in administering the Center’s working partnerships through sustainable collaborative relationships that enhance academic and community engagement.

  • Develop systems and processes necessary for the recruitment, tracking, planning, and execution of projects.

  • Support the executive staff by facilitating project logistics such as scheduling meetings, reserving conference rooms and work spaces for community members, and conducting conference calls.

  • Ensure completion of deliverables and adherence to timelines, track milestones and timelines across projects, and institute necessary work flow, across personnel.

  • Serve as a liaison to UVA student groups who are working on Equity Center priorities. Help build a community for students.

  • Serve as the point of contact for communication and ensuring information is disseminated through social media and other mediums. 

  • Work with Community Engaged Teaching courses to help set up events and experiences for students and faculty.

  • In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned by the Director of Operations.



  • Bachelor's degree with at least two years of relevant experience required. Six years of relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.

  • Must have a commitment to serve communities by reducing racial and socioeconomic inequity.

  • Ability to develop, articulate and implement organizational vision.

  • Excellent organizational skills, time management, and transparent, high integrity leadership skills.

  • Ability to make sound decisions based on competing and complex information from multiple sources.

  • Ability to work with tact on complex, sensitive and confidential issues.

  • The analytical skills and judgment to interpret data and take the appropriate action in circumstances /situations.

  • Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's or terminal degree

  • Preference will be given to candidates’ knowledge and experience with Charlottesville and Albemarle County organizations working to redress racial and socio-economic inequalities.

This is an exempt level, benefited position and is restricted as it is dependent upon project need, availability of funding, and performance.

This position is located in Charlottesville, VA.

Anticipated Hiring Range: $60,000 – 70,000, commensurate with education and experience.
