R3 Spring 2022 Updates

June Updates

The R3 Team is looking back on the progress in this last year and looking ahead toward what comes next. The current R3 Coordinator, who started in June 2021, will be transitioning out of PHAR on July 15, 2022. While the R3 Team is preparing for the change of leadership, they are laying the critical groundwork needed to keep the machine turning after startup.

Prior to the current Coordinator’s departure, the team hopes to have completed the Reviewer onboarding process. This month’s focus will be on adapting the current Standard Operating Procedures into a more easily digestible format and making sure everyone on the R3 Team has completed the CITI Trainings.

Throughout this transition, the R3 Team plans to maintain its current relationships with local institutions and organizations, with the goal of continuously serving Residents and advancing the pursuit of research justice.

In addition, the R3 Reviewers will be “piloting” the research review process through collaborative discussion and design of a research question with the support of the R3 Steering Committee. Relations with the IRB are expected to strengthen as the Reviewers become familiar with the research process, observe Board meetings, and meet the IRB Staff.

With the help of a student volunteer, the R3 Reviewers’ efforts so far are being compiled into a curriculum that can be adapted and delivered to future additions to the R3 Team, including the incoming R3 Coordinator.

None of these successes would have been possible without the support of the Equity Center and R3’s team members. Though this will be the final report from the current R3 Coordinator, she is very grateful for the time she has had at PHAR and working with the Equity Center – there are many more exciting updates coming just around the corner!

PHAR is currently hiring for 2 positions, including the R3 Coordinator and a part-time Executive Assistant.

May Updates

The R3 Team is looking back on the progress in this last year and looking ahead toward what comes next. The current R3 Coordinator, who started in June 2021, will be transitioning out of PHAR on July 15, 2022. While the R3 Team is preparing for the change of leadership, they are laying the critical groundwork needed to keep the machine turning after startup.

The R3 Reviewers are hard at work continuing their onboarding process by broadening their understanding of research concepts and procedures. They will be working toward their CITI Certification and getting acquainted with the R3 Standard Operating Procedures for research protocol review as preparation for the R3 Coordinator’s transition. Other skills they have leveraged in the recent weeks include interpreting academic articles, formulating research questions, and conducting background research on topics of interest.

On the structural side, the R3 Team is creating a Tactical Plan to help guide the offboarding process and will soon begin the search for a new R3 Coordinator. We are setting priorities and deadlines to keep the project running smoothly through these changes. With the help of a student volunteer, the R3 Reviewers’ efforts so far will be compiled into a curriculum that can be adapted and delivered to future additions to the R3 Team, including the incoming R3 Coordinator.

Since the R3 Reviewers started at PHAR, the R3 Team has been able to get valuable feedback on its outreach methods and adapt accordingly. Their input is critical and ensures R3 fulfills PHAR’s mission of Resident-centered and Resident-driven organizing. In the coming months, the R3 Reviewers will become more involved in planning and facilitating the monthly R3 Roundtables to elevate Resident voices and connect with community members.

None of these successes would have been possible without the support of the Equity Center and R3’s team members. There are many more exciting updates coming just around the corner!

PHAR is currently hiring for 3 positions, including the R3 Coordinator, Junior Community Organizer, and a part-time Executive Assistant.

April Updates

The R3 Team has had a month full of successes. After a lot of hard work, we have created an introductory video for the project that we will share far and wide. This video was made entirely by the R3 Reviewers and is the first tangible realization of the Resident-Led vision for the project.

The Reviewers are starting individual projects to equip them with research skills and prepare them to begin reviewing proposals in the near future. These projects will be on topics of interest to the team members and other Residents, such as affordable housing and mental health. The goal is to be able to share informational videos on relevant topics with community members to help increase awareness and participation around the topic!

The team’s next project is going to focus on the relevant topic of Community Safety and how it affects Residents. In addition to building team capacities and getting familiar with housing topics, this project will offer the team an opportunity to apply technical skills such as independent research and presentation development.

The team has finalized our Communications Plan to establish key messages and modify our programming based on the valuable feedback we receive. This plan will serve as a guide for our community engagement and outreach practices going forward.

Since the R3 Reviewers started at PHAR, the R3 Team has been able to get valuable feedback on its outreach methods and adapt accordingly. Their input is critical and highlights PHAR’s mission of Resident-centered and Resident-driven organizing. To spread the word about our project, we will need to be flexible and adjust our outreach tactics based on the feedback of the R3 Reviewers and other community members.

A spectacular platform for collecting this feedback has been our monthly R3 Roundtables. April’s Roundtable will take place outside the Westhaven Nursing Clinic on April 20th at 4PM. Zoom login information is also available to those who We will continue hosting these events, conducting outreach, and soliciting feedback from community members.

None of these successes would have been possible without the support of the Equity Center and R3’s team members. There are many more exciting updates coming just around the corner!

March Updates

The Residents for Respectful Research (R3) Team has been hard at work learning how to make the gears of the project turn. As a step on the road to protocol review, the R3 Reviewers are beginning projects that will deeply acquaint them with PHAR’s work. We will be tackling the current and relevant issue of zoning in the coming month to create resources that will support PHAR’s community outreach efforts. In addition to building team capacities and getting familiar with housing topics, this project will offer the team an opportunity to apply technical skills such as independent research and presentation development.

February Updates

The R3 Team is starting 2022 off by ramping up outreach and education efforts! The team has been hard at work going through onboarding processes for three Residents for Respectful Research (R3) Reviewers. R3 reviewers are spending their time learning more about the history of PHAR, the history of research, and how research connects to the everyday lives and lived experiences of Residents of Public Housing. Before long, they will prepare for the first of many R3 proposal reviews!

The team’s February Roundtable was very well attended, with a total of 7 attendees (4 of whom are Residents). Cecilia, the R3 Coordinator, has also been connecting with various groups at the University in order to spread the word and share the importance of community-engaged research.

In the coming months, the team will continue to host monthly R3 Roundtables, which are currently open to Residents and will be open to community members and research teams in the future. These events are used as a platform for sharing ideas, collaborating, and problem-solving, but have also served as an “Info Session” of sorts, creating a space where Residents can come learn about R3 and research as a whole.

R3 Roundtables are hosted on the third Wednesday of each month at 4 PM over Zoom. Any community members interested in attending may contact Cecilia Barber for more information at cecilia@pharcville.org.

The systems and structures that will govern the R3-IRB Partnership are coming together quickly. As these pieces continue to fall into place, the R3 Team and the IRB are looking toward the future and preparing for review!

R3’s major successes this month include:

  • * R3 Reviewer Hiring:

    • * Continuation of the Onboarding Process

  • * Successful and well-attended R3 Roundtable

  • * Engagement with various local and UVA-based groups interested in R3 and Community-Based Research Review

None of these successes would have been possible without the support of the Equity Center and R3’s team members. There are many more exciting updates coming just around the corner!
